Durg, Chhattisgarh: A tragic incident unfolded during Ganesh immersion in Durg district as a dispute escalated, leading to the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old youth named Rahul. His father and brother were also injured in the altercation, leaving the family devastated. Following Rahul’s untimely death, enraged family members have issued warnings of possible blockades in protest. The local police have initiated an investigation into the case.
According to Radhe, who was injured in the altercation, he had accompanied his father, Jaikaran Sahu, and his late brother, Rahul Sahu, to the Ganesh immersion event. The family was peacefully sitting in a local shop, enjoying tea, when the situation took a tragic turn. Nine individuals from Bhilai were also present at the location. The conflict erupted when Rahul accidentally spilled tea after looking back at the group of boys.
As tempers flared, the situation escalated, and the boys began to assault Rahul. When Rahul’s brother and father intervened to protect him, they, too, became targets of the attackers’ violence. One of the assailants brandished a knife and fatally stabbed Rahul in the stomach before fleeing the scene. The family rushed Rahul to the district hospital, where doctors, sadly, declared him deceased.
Rahul Sahu, a 21-year-old resident of Green Chowk in Durg, had participated in the Ganpati idol immersion festivities in the same locality. The tragic dispute occurred during an evening gathering near the Shivnath river ghat, where a DJ was playing.
In the aftermath of the murder, deep anger has gripped the family and local Vishwa Hindu Parishad members. They have refused to conduct Rahul’s final rites until all the culprits are apprehended. Family members have converged around the local police station, issuing stern warnings that they will stage protests and blockades if the accused are not swiftly brought to justice.
Questions have also been raised regarding the police’s security arrangements during the Ganesh immersion event. Vishwa Hindu Parishad district convenor, Saurabh Dewangan, has alleged that despite the large crowd at the event, only two policemen were assigned to duty at the Shivnath river ghat.
The family and local Vishwa Hindu Parishad members have additionally called for compensation and government employment opportunities similar to those provided in the past to victims’ families in Khursipar. They have threatened to launch significant protests if their demands are not met.
