Counter-terrorism police in the United Kingdom have launched an investigation after Border Force officials seized material containing uranium at Heathrow Airport. The contaminated material was discovered on a passenger flight that arrived from Oman on December 29, 2022. It is believed that the package originated in Pakistan and was intended for an Iranian business based in the UK. Scotland Yard confirmed that its counter-terrorism team is investigating the incident.
Commander Richard Smith of the Metropolitan Police reassured the public that the amount of contaminated material was extremely small and posed no threat to the public. He stated, “Although our investigation remains ongoing, from our inquiries so far it does not appear to be linked to any direct threat. As the public would expect, however, we will continue to follow up on all available lines of inquiry to ensure this is definitely the case.”
Uranium is a natural metal that is found in the earth, but it can be dangerous to humans as it is an essential nuclear element. The authorities have not made any arrests in connection with the seizure, and they are working with partner agencies to investigate the matter and ensure that there is no risk to the public.
The Home Office has stated that it does not believe there is any threat to the public. Commander Smith highlighted that the incident highlights the excellent capability of the authorities and their partners in monitoring the country’s ports and borders to ensure the safety and security of the public.
It is important to note that the investigation is ongoing and more details will be released as they become available. However, the authorities assure that they are taking all necessary steps to protect the public.
