I recently had breakfast at Kaaram Podi in Raipur after seeing several recommendations on social media. The restaurant is located opposite Devendra Nagar Police Station.
The establishment itself is relatively small, with 12 tightly packed tables and an open kitchen. The decor features beautiful murals inspired by Kerala, and the furniture is of high quality. However, the space is quite cramped, and I found myself constantly jostled by both staff and other diners during my visit. I believe that removing two tables could greatly improve the flow of the restaurant. Additionally, Kaaram Podi does not offer table service; customers must pay for their orders before receiving their food. Unfortunately, this system is not conducive to a comfortable dining experience, especially given the limited space available.
The menu at Kaaram Podi is nothing exceptional and offers fewer options than most South Indian food outlets. As the name suggests, the menu focuses on idlis and dosas, with variations such as plain, ghee, and Kaaram Podi. My food was served to me as it was prepared, which can be an awkward experience, especially when dining with others who are still waiting for their food. While the food was generally South Indian in style, it lacked authenticity. The dosa and sambar had a hint of sweetness, which is typical of the northern Indian style of preparation but not commonly found in the South. The upma, which was a special dish on the Sunday morning of my visit, was disappointing in both taste and texture.
Overall, Kaaram Podi may be a popular spot for locals due to its popularity on social media. However, I would not make a special trip to visit the restaurant solely for its food.
