The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Ramesh Sinha as the new Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court. This recommendation comes following the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Arup Kumar Goswami, who will be stepping down from his position on March 10, 2023.
Justice Sinha currently serves as a senior puisine judge of the Allahabad High Court, a position he has held since his elevation in November 2011. The Supreme Court Collegium made the recommendation after taking into consideration the concurrence of all consultee-judges of the Allahabad High Court, who agreed that Justice Sinha is fit and suitable for the position.
The resolution of the Supreme Court Collegium cited the lack of representation of the Allahabad High Court among the Chief Justices of High Courts as one of the reasons for recommending Justice Sinha. The recent elevation of Justice Pankaj Mithal to the Supreme Court had left the Allahabad High Court without any representation among the Chief Justices.
The resolution stated that the Supreme Court Collegium is of the considered view that Justice Ramesh Sinha is “fit and suitable in all respects” for the position of Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court. With this recommendation, it is expected that Justice Sinha will be appointed as the new Chief Justice once Justice Arup Kumar Goswami demits office.
