Counter-terrorism police in the United Kingdom have launched an investigation after Border Force officials seized material containing uranium at Heathrow Airport. The contaminated material was discovered on a passenger flight that arrived from Oman on December 29, 2022. It is believed that the package originated in Pakistan and was intended for an Iranian business based in the UK. Scotland Yard confirmed that its counter-terrorism team is investigating the incident.
Commander Richard Smith of the Metropolitan Police reassured the public that the amount of contaminated material was extremely small and posed no threat to the public. He stated, “Although our investigation remains ongoing, from our inquiries so far it does not appear to be linked to any direct threat. As the public would expect, however, we will continue to follow up on all available lines of inquiry to ensure this is definitely the case.”
