Luv Ranjan, known for his acerbic take on love and relationships in movies like Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, presents a more balanced approach in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. The film’s title, which translates to “Liar, Deceiver,” suggests a romantic comedy with a twist.
The story revolves around Tinni (Shraddha Kapoor) and Mickey (Ranbir Kapoor), two commitment-phobic individuals who prefer short-term flings. Mickey even runs a break-up service with his friend Manu (Anubhav Singh Bassi). Despite their initial reservations, Tinni and Mickey fall in love and plan a big Delhi wedding. However, a predictable obstacle arises that relies on an outdated plot device.
The 164-minute film drags on, relying on cliches, Pritam’s loud music, and suspension of disbelief. The tone of the movie shifts abruptly from Luv Ranjan’s acerbic humor to slapstick and sappy romance. The screenplay, written by Ranjan and Rahul Mody, has some sharp barbs about love and marriage but ultimately falls flat.
Ranbir Kapoor exudes charm and charisma as Mickey, but the real standout is Shraddha Kapoor, who shines in a role that allows her to showcase her versatility as an actor. The supporting cast, including Dimple Kapadia and Boney Kapoor as Mickey’s parents, are over-the-top, and the talented child actor Inayat Verma steals the show with her witty performance.
Overall, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar is a casting gimmick in search of a workable plot. While it has its moments of humor and romance, it fails to leave a lasting impression.
