AAP MP Sanjay Singh has been suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the duration of the monsoon session due to his alleged actions during a heated face-off between the government and the opposition over the violence in Manipur. The suspension came after Mr. Singh reportedly jumped into the well of the House, raised slogans, and refused to comply with the Chairman’s warnings.
The timing of the suspension has added to the political tension as the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party have been clashing over the Centre’s ordinance on the control of bureaucrats in Delhi. The AAP strongly reacted to Mr. Singh’s suspension, asserting that he is a prominent voice of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and accusing the BJP of attempting to silence him. Party leader and Delhi Minister, Saurabh Bharadwaj, expressed determination to continue the fight against the government’s actions.
Floor leaders of opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha also walked out of a meeting called by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to discuss Mr. Singh’s suspension. The Chairman objected to the attendance of Raghav Chadha of the AAP and Santanu Sen of the Trinamool Congress, as they are not the floor leaders of their respective parties.
Earlier, during the resumed Rajya Sabha proceedings, opposition MPs expressed their desire for a long discussion on the violence in Manipur and demanded the Prime Minister’s presence to initiate the discussion. Despite this, the question hour was allowed to commence. However, when Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Shekhawat was addressing questions, AAP MP Sanjay Singh allegedly caused disruptions by raising slogans in the well of the House.
The suspension of AAP MP Sanjay Singh has further intensified the ongoing political strife, with the opposition vowing to stand united against attempts to curb their voices in the parliamentary proceedings. The situation remains tense as both sides continue to assert their positions in the Rajya Sabha.
