Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has pledged assistance to his Manipur counterpart, N. Biren Singh, in restoring peace in the neighboring state. During a telephonic conversation, Singh requested Zoramthanga’s help in resolving the ongoing violence in Manipur and ensuring the safety of the Meitei community residing in Mizoram.
Zoramthanga took to Twitter to share the details of their conversation, stating that Singh reached out seeking aid in achieving peaceful coexistence. The Mizoram CM assured Singh that the state government deeply regrets the violence and has taken measures to mitigate it.
Zoramthanga also expressed his support for the actions taken by the Central government and the Manipur government to restore normalcy in the state. He emphasized that the people of Mizoram are empathetic toward the Meiteis and that the state government, along with NGOs, has implemented measures to promote peace and security.
Furthermore, Zoramthanga assured Singh that Meiteis residing in Mizoram have nothing to fear as long as they are within the state. The government will continue to prioritize their safety and security.
The ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur has claimed over 100 lives and has been ongoing for more than a month. As a result, a significant number of people, including 196 individuals in the past two days, have sought refuge in Mizoram. The total number of displaced individuals currently sheltered in the state has reached 11,699, according to the state home department.
Among the districts in Mizoram, Kolasib hosts 4,250 displaced individuals, followed by Aizawl with 3,825 and Saitual with 2,845. The remaining 779 individuals have sought shelter in Champhai, Lunglei, Mamit, Hnahthial, Serchhip, Siaha, Khawzawl, and Lawngtlai districts, as reported by the department.
