Raipur, Chhattisgarh: In a heartwarming ceremony marking the International Day of Older Persons, Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister, Bhupesh Baghel, paid his respects to the elderly. The event, held at Raipur’s Sardar Balbir Singh Juneja Indoor Stadium, was a poignant tribute to the invaluable contributions of senior citizens. Chief Minister Baghel, known for his empathetic leadership, personally honored the elderly attendees with shawls and quince. Furthermore, he spearheaded the distribution of 825 assistive devices, which included electronic wheelchairs, spectacles, and hearing aids, to the seniors in attendance.
This remarkable gathering saw participation from over six and a half thousand senior individuals representing various districts. Chief Minister Baghel, in his address, lauded the profound wisdom and life experiences that the elderly bring to society. He emphasized that old age represents the culmination of knowledge and experiences, making senior citizens the beacons of wisdom that guide future generations.
Baghel emphasized the vital role that elders play in imparting their valuable life lessons and wisdom to younger members of society. He underlined the importance of preserving the traditional values that respect and support senior citizens, acknowledging their pivotal role in shaping society.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the challenges that modern society poses to older individuals, often leading to their neglect. In response, the Chhattisgarh government launched the Cyan helpline, offering support to the elderly, persons with disabilities, widows, and transgenders. The government allocated Rs 1 crore in the budget for the Cyan helpline center and toll-free number, receiving over 76 thousand calls, including 1493 from elderly citizens.
Additionally, Chief Minister Baghel announced an increase in the monthly pension amount under the Social Security Pension Scheme from Rs 350 to Rs 500. This enhancement directly benefits more than 13 lakh elderly citizens in the state. The government’s commitment to senior citizens also extends to the distribution of essential assistive devices and the establishment of Sian Jatan Clinics, dedicated to the health and well-being of the elderly.
Concluding his address, Chief Minister Baghel urged individuals to exhibit empathy and understanding towards the elderly in their families and communities. He emphasized that caring for senior citizens is a form of worship, and their blessings are the most precious reward.
The event featured cultural performances by students from Divyang Mahavidyalaya Raipur, a free health camp offering hearing and eye tests, and the provision of spectacles. A stall by the Social Welfare Department provided valuable information about government schemes tailored to senior citizens. The event was attended by prominent figures, including Social Welfare Minister Anila Bhendiya and other dignitaries.
Chhattisgarh’s state government, under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Baghel, remains steadfast in its commitment to the welfare and well-being of senior citizens, ensuring that they receive the care, respect, and support they rightfully deserve.
