Following Congress’ resounding defeat in the Chhattisgarh assembly elections, veteran leader Mahant Ramsundar Das has tendered his resignation from the party. The seasoned politician attributed his defeat in the assembly polls as the primary motive for his resignation, sending the formal resignation to Congress state president Deepak Baij.
Das, who contested against senior BJP leader Brijmohan Agarwal from the Raipur South Assembly seat, stepped down from the primary membership of Congress citing his loss in the election. The electoral contest between Agarwal and Das had drawn significant attention, making the Raipur South seat a focal point during the elections. Despite the fierce competition, Brijmohan Agarwal secured a significant victory.
A Two-time MLA:
Mahant Ramsundar Das, a prominent figure in Chhattisgarh’s Congress circle, held the position of MLA twice in the past. He secured the Congress ticket and won the elections from the Pamgarh assembly seat in 2003. Additionally, in 2008, he clinched victory from Jaijaipur. Notably, during Chief Minister Baghel’s tenure in 2018, he was appointed as the chairman of the Cow Service Commission and was accorded ministerial status. However, this election brought an unexpected defeat for Das.
Post the electoral defeat, Congress is undergoing a period of reflection and internal evaluations. The party is yet to announce its opposition leader in Chhattisgarh amidst the ongoing changes following the election outcome.
