In the Charama police station area of Kanker district, a girl named Lekha Dewangan cheated a young man named Hrithik Dewangan of Rs 24 lakh on the pretext of marriage and then married another young man. The police arrested Lekha Dewangan from Bilaspur and recovered Rs 9 lakh in cash and jewelry worth Rs 5 lakh from her. Superintendent of Police Shalabh Sinha revealed the entire matter in a press conference.
Hrithik Dewangan, a potato-onion businessman from Charama, befriended Lekha Dewangan on Facebook 5 years ago. Love blossomed between the two, and Lekha assured him of her love. She extorted more than Rs 10 lakh from Hrithik over the 5-year affair, often making different excuses. When Hrithik was planning to marry her, Lekha demanded that he buy land and a house before they could get married.
Lekha Dewangan took more than 12 lakh rupees from Hrithik in the name of land registry and buying a house. Even after this, their conversations continued. Suddenly, Lekha’s phone started getting switched off, and the young man discovered that Lekha had absconded from her house since March 1 with gold and silver jewelry and cash. Hrithik lodged a case against Lekha at Charama police station, and the police registered an offense of cheating.
The cyber cell helped search for Lekha Dewangan, who was arrested and found to have cheated Hrithik Dewangan of a total of Rs 24 lakh. The police have not disclosed the name of the accused woman’s husband, who was also a victim as Lekha had fraudulently married him and misled him.
