Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, a troubling land grab incident has emerged, causing public outrage and triggering a political storm. The controversy revolves around a viral video that captures Sheru Aslam, the city president of the Youth Congress, allegedly threatening a farmer’s life while attempting to unlawfully seize his farmland. The victim, Umendra Ram Sahu, wasted no time in reporting the incident to the local police, highlighting Aslam’s intimidatory tactics to occupy approximately half an acre of his valuable agricultural property. Shockingly, the video shows Aslam brandishing a firearm as he menacingly warns Mr. Sahu, “If you dare to set foot on this land, I will take your life.”
Mr. Sahu staunchly asserts his rightful ownership of the farmland, which sustains his family and livelihood. Despite lodging a formal police complaint, the farmer lives in constant fear, as the allegations have brought additional attention to the ongoing land grab dispute.
In response, Mr. Aslam, currently under investigation for his alleged threatening behavior, categorically denies the accusations, dismissing them as a political conspiracy orchestrated by the BJP. Aslam claims that the charges are a malicious attempt to tarnish his reputation and oust him from his district president position ahead of the upcoming elections. He further argues that the Youth Congress plays a vital role within the party, accusing Mr. Sahu of trying to unlawfully acquire his property.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the handling of the situation. Bhikham Sahu, the brother of Upendra Sahu, voiced apprehensions regarding the conduct of the Station House Officer, alleging a clandestine meeting with Aslam without prior notification or consent.
Senior police officer Pooja Kumar confirms that the land dispute falls under the jurisdiction of Sarkanda’s police station. She assures the public that appropriate action has been taken and advises both parties to await the finalization of land demarcation.
Significantly, this is not the first time Mr. Aslam has faced allegations regarding land disputes, adding a disturbing layer to the unfolding controversy. The incident has exacerbated political tensions, with the BJP questioning the state of law and order, while the Congress accuses the BJP of exploiting the issue for political gain.
Sushil Anand, the media in-charge for the Congress, comes to Mr. Aslam’s defense, claiming that the BJP unjustly targets district-level Youth Congress leaders to divert attention from more pressing matters. Anand assures the public that the police have implemented preventive measures and launched a thorough investigation into the land grab issue. While he does not directly address the alleged threats made by Mr. Aslam, he emphasizes that severe consequences will be imposed if any individuals are found guilty.
