The incident revolves around Dr. Shahana, reportedly engaged to Dr. EA Ruwais. Dr. Ruwais, known as an Islamist-Communist SFI leader and a state committee member of the Kerala Medical Postgraduates Association (KMPGA), was allegedly associated with a significant dowry demand for their marriage, including 150 sovereign gold, 15 acres of land, and a BMW car.
Reports suggest that following these demands and alleged refusal by Dr. Ruwais to proceed with the marriage, Dr. Shahana fell into depression. The situation was further compounded by the recent loss of Shahana’s father, Abdul Aziz, which left the family unable to fulfill such extensive financial requirements. Despite efforts to negotiate and offer 50 sovereign gold, 50 lakh rupees, and a car, the demands reportedly remained unmet.
Tragically, Dr. Shahana’s distress over these circumstances culminated in an irreparable loss. She reportedly succumbed to immense pressure and, according to police findings, took her own life. A note recovered from her room contained a poignant message, “All everybody needs is money. Money is bigger than anything,” though no specific names were mentioned.
This heart-rending incident sheds light on the complexities and challenges surrounding societal expectations, financial pressures, and the grave consequences that can result from dowry-related disputes.
