Raipur’s mayor, Ejaz Dhebar, was called to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office on Tuesday for questioning. This comes after his house was raided by ED officials in March. The mayor is being questioned about evidence that is believed to be in the hands of ED. Dhebar has previously claimed that he is being targeted by the ED, and this latest summons is part of a campaign to harass him.
On Monday, Dhebar celebrated his birthday, but the next day he was summoned to the ED’s office. The interrogation of Dhebar is ongoing, with Congress workers protesting outside the office. Many women gathered outside and started protesting, sitting on the road itself. They attempted to enter the office by breaking the gate. A large number of women police personnel were deployed on the spot, and due to the uproar, the gate of the outer campus of the ED office had to be closed.
The mayor has previously accused the ED of harassing him, and he repeated those claims during the latest incident. Dhebar accused the officers of taking swift action against public representatives and IAS officers. He also claimed that the ED has some evidence against him but has not shown it. He believes that the summons are part of a campaign to harass him and the Congress party.
This is not the first time that Dhebar has clashed with the ED. He previously accused the officers of preventing him from offering Namaz during the holy month of Ramzan. He also accused them of raiding his brother’s house and searching it, even though the search warrant was issued in his name.
The situation outside the ED’s office remains tense, with Congress workers setting up pandals and women protesting loudly. The mayor’s interrogation is ongoing, and it remains to be seen what the ED’s next move will be.
